how we met

Paul and Emily’s paths most likely crossed at their CrossFit gym — perhaps exchanging a few hopeful glances between sweaty workouts and post-WOD fist bumps. However, their official meeting didn’t happen until the CrossFit Currie Barracks anniversary party in August 2017. At the very end of the night, Paul graciously offered to walk Emily home to make sure she got there safely. A pair of “forgotten” sunglasses at Emily’s place conveniently created the perfect excuse for Paul to message her the next day.

After a few casual meetups, Paul asked Emily out on a proper date. A few dinners and a visit to the Loose Moose improv theatre later, Emily was completely swept off her feet and undeniably smitten. You could say the rest is history.

Since that night in 2017, Paul and Emily have built a full and loving life together. They’ve shared countless memories with Paul’s daughter, Sofia, welcomed their adorable French bulldog, Peach, in May 2020, and brought their daughter, Scarlett, into the world in December 2022. Over nearly eight years, their adventures have taken them from New York and Coachella to Sicily — and even through a torrential downpour on a boat in Copenhagen.

Today, Paul and Emily still work out together at the same gym, Barracks Fitness—even if it’s just squeezing in a Saturday class. They cherish their downtown Calgary life, daily walks along the river, and often falling asleep to movies at the end of each day.

Engagement Story

After nearly seven years together, Paul planned a getaway for just him and Emily. Could this be it? Emily wondered as the trip approached. Over the years, there had been a few subtle hints — and more not-so-subtle ones. Friends had gotten engaged, married, and even started asking Paul directly what his plan was.

In July 2024, the two set off for Saltspring Island, eager for some much-needed quality time. They stayed at a charming resort on the island’s south side, Lightwater Cove, complete with a perfect view of the ocean. On their first morning there, they kicked things off with a workout and made plans to go for a hike afterward. Emily’s suspicions grew — she could probably count on one hand how many times they’d gone hiking together in the past seven years.

With a few sandwiches and some bubbly waters packed in Paul’s backpack, they set off to hike Mount Erskine. The summit offered spectacular views and, as far as Emily was concerned, a perfect spot to propose. But apparently, that wasn’t Paul’s style. They sat, enjoyed their picnic, and took a few photos. Emily almost turned to him and said, “I guess this isn’t the place,” but held her tongue.

On their way back down, just about 100 meters from the summit, Paul veered off to explore a grassy area with sweeping views. Insisting he had packed more bubbly waters, he began rummaging through his bag — searching for water Emily knew wasn’t there. Then, not to Emily’s surprise, Paul got down on one knee and pulled out a ring.

Drenched in sweat, they shared tears and laughter. It was the perfect proposal. A few (slightly staged) photos later, they made their way down the mountain—ready to begin their next adventure together.
